Supervisor Says New Site is Safer, Easier to Navigate and More Useful
Issued by: Town of Hempstead, Office of Supervisor Laura Gillen
(HEMPSTEAD, NY) August 14, 2018 – Town of Hempstead Supervisor Laura Gillen announced that the Town of Hempstead has launched its new website, www.hempsteadny.gov in order to replace the functionally obsolete website, toh.li, which was designed in 1997 under a domain commonly used by the Principality of Liechtenstein, a small, constitutional monarchy that is tucked away between Switzerland and Austria.
The new website, designed completely in-house by the Office of Communications, is the Town’s first officially designated website by the federal government’s Office of General Services, affording the Town expedited support and resources from the Department of Homeland Security in the event of a cyber-attack or hacking attempt.
“I’m proud to bring back home our new website, which helps usher this town into the 21st century,” said Town of Hempstead Supervisor Laura Gillen. “Protecting digital infrastructure through enhanced cybersecurity is quickly becoming the most important issue facing governments. This new website not only presents information in a more easily navigable and organized manner for residents, it helps the Town respond much quicker in the event of a cyber-attack.”
The new platform also features the ability to host multiple, simultaneous users, who can upload information without possessing a background in complex computer coding; thus, allowing for more timely, pertinent information to reach residents.
“This will hopefully foster greater, real-time communications between residents, elected officials and Town departments,” said Gillen.
The new website was designed to integrate seamlessly into the Town’s recently released ‘Hempstead-On-The Go’ app, which provides an easily accessible, user-friendly interface for local residents to access news and view upcoming events and calendar items, along with links to live streaming public meetings and online help forms, from any hand held smartphone or tablet device.
The app currently fits any device, be it a desktop, mobile device or tablet, and can be downloaded by visiting the new site: app.hempsteadny.gov with any hand-held device and then clicking either the “Add to Home Screen” button for android users, or the “Share” button followed by the “Add to Home Screen” button for apple users, located on the bottom of the screen. Existing app users will need to re-download the app from the new website.
“My administration will continue to make public information more easily accessible and searchable, while simultaneously protecting personal information by addressing the growing risks associated in the complex world of cybersecurity,” said Gillen.
