Representing the Third Councilmanic District, Bruce Blakeman's appointment to the Hempstead Town Board in January 2015 signified a homecoming in more ways than one. That's because Mr. Blakeman marks his return as a Hempstead Town Councilman, a position in which he served from 1993 through 1995, and will be representing a district that includes his hometown of Atlantic Beach and his childhood community of Valley Stream.

Mr. Blakeman's extensive experience in government service also includes his service as Presiding Officer of the Nassau County Legislature from 1996 through 1999.

What's more, he served as Commissioner for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey from 2001 to 2009, overseeing major airports, bridges, tunnels, ports and facilities across the metropolitan area.

Beyond his service in the public sector, Mr. Blakeman has experience in an array of fields, including health care, community leadership, academia, business and finance. A graduate of California Western Law School and Arizona State University, Blakeman is a practicing attorney and educator, notably serving as a Senior Fellow of Long Island University's Homeland Security Department. He has been admitted to practice law before the United States Supreme Court, New York and New Jersey courts, the United States Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit, and the United States District Courts, Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. Areas of practice include real estate, commercial litigation, personal injury, land use, transportation, finance and insurance. He has appeared frequently on national and local television as a guest commentator on legal, political, budgetary, finance, homeland security and transportation issues.

Active in the community, Mr. Blakeman served as chairman and co-founder of the Hewlett House Council, a breast cancer learning resource center and volunteered as an assistant varsity basketball coach at Malverne High School.

Additionally, he has held leadership posts for several business, community and law enforcement organizations, including Vice President of the American Jewish Congress, Executive Director of the New York Police Chiefs Benevolent Association, former Associate Director of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Foundation, member of the Tempo Group Board of Directors (non-profit drug and alcohol counseling center), Deputy Counsel for the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Benevolent Association and a member of the Franklin Hospital Medical Center's Development Advisory Board.

Mr. Blakeman was born in Oceanside, raised in Valley Stream and is a graduate of Valley Stream Central High School. He currently resides in Atlantic Beach.
