Animal Control officers respond to over 6,000 requests for service, including 500 night emergency calls, every year. If you have a problem concerning a loose or stray dog or an injured or sick cat, contact the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter at (516) 785-5220. After hours, contact the Department of Public Safety at (516) 538-1900.
Please contact the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation for information about controlling nuisance wildlife (ie. raccoons, Canada geese, bats).
The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter boasts one of the highest adoption rates in the nation. Come tour the Animal Shelter, meet a dog or cat, and bring the love of a pet into your home. All adopted pets will be spayed or neutered, will receive required inoculations and will be microchipped. These are included in adoption fees. Although the shelter evaluates pets for behavior and general health, we remind you that pets are adopted at your own risk and that newly adopted pets should be examined by your own veterinarian. Effective Tuesday, February 9, 2021, the Town of Hempstead TNR program will begin operating on a limited schedule, accepting trapped feral cats on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
To schedule an appointment, please call the shelter at (516) 785-5220. You will be asked to complete a COVID screening form and bring it with you to the appointment. Forms will be emailed after the appointment is scheduled.
Entry to front lobby will be allowed with a temperature check and a properly-worn mandated mask, one person at a time. After the surgery is completed, the shelter will reach out and schedule a time for pickup, where the feline will be placed directly in the vehicle. Please be aware we can only accommodate one cat per appointment.
Central Veterinary Associates will continue accepting feral cats for TNR on behalf of the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter. Requests involving trapped cats for this program can be referred to:
