Animal Control officers respond to over 6,000 requests for service, including 500 night emergency calls, every year. If you have a problem concerning a loose or stray dog or an injured or sick cat, contact the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter at (516) 785-5220. After hours, contact the Department of Public Safety at (516) 538-1900.
Please contact the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation for information about controlling nuisance wildlife (ie. raccoons, Canada geese, bats).
The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter boasts one of the highest adoption rates in the nation. Come tour the Animal Shelter, meet a dog or cat, and bring the love of a pet into your home. All adopted pets will be spayed or neutered, will receive required inoculations and will be microchipped. These are included in adoption fees. Although the shelter evaluates pets for behavior and general health, we remind you that pets are adopted at your own risk and that newly adopted pets should be examined by your own veterinarian. Effective September 1, 2020, Central Veterinary Associates will begin accepting feral cats for TNR on behalf of the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter.
