Today, the Town of Hempstead hosted five officials that were re-elected to the Hempstead Town Board this past November. Supervisor Don Clavin, Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Council Members Anthony D’Esposito and Dennis Dunne, and Town Clerk Kate Murray were all inducted to their positions during an outdoor ceremony at Senior Councilwoman Dorothy L. Goosby Plaza in front of Hempstead Town Hall. Also participating in the event were Councilman Tom Muscarella, Councilman Chris Carini and Receiver of Taxes Jeanine Driscoll.

The ceremony featured a special video presentation and reflections from clergy – including Reverend Michael Duffy of St. Agnes Cathedral of Rockville Centre, Rabbi Mordechai Kamenetzky of Yeshiva of South Shore of Hewlett, Dr. Calvin Butts III of Abyssinian Baptist Church of Harlem and Reverend Msgr. John Tutone of Sacred Heart Church of Island Park. Additionally, Briana Fernandez of the NYPD, a Valley Stream native, performed the National Anthem, and famous Long Island tenor Christopher Macchio concluded the event with a stirring rendition of “God Bless America.”

The Color Guard was provided by Nassau County Police Department and the event opened with a special American flag salute provided by local firefighters and first responders. Clavin and Murray were inducted by the Hon. Joseph G. Cairo, Jr., former Hempstead Town Councilman and chairman of the Nassau County Republican Committee; Goosby was inducted by the Hon. Letitia James, New York State Attorney General; D’Esposito was sworn in by the Hon. Ed Ra, New York State Assemblyman; and Dunne was inducted by the Hon. Joseph Mondello, former presiding Supervisor and former U.S. Ambassador to Trinidad & Tobago.

Speeches throughout the program highlighted the work of Supervisor Clavin and the Hempstead Town Board as they navigated the shockwaves of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Working together, the Supervisor and the Town Board maintained essential services, and utilized federal COVID funds to provide direct community relief. Some of the outreach programs including the funding of the state’s first mobile vaccination unit with Mount Sinai South Nassau, which has provided nearly 10,000 COVID-19 vaccines and boosters to residents across America’s largest township. Additionally, the Hempstead Town Board provided millions of meals to citizens in need, financial aid to hospitals, schools, villages and fire departments, thousands of PPE kits to small businesses and non-profit organizations and so much more.

Supervisor Clavin and the Town Board demonstrated fiscal prudence in the face of the pandemic that took a toll on public health and the economy, approving a town budget that froze taxes in 2021 and cut taxes for 2022. This tax relief was crucial to town residents who had been harshly affected by the pandemic. Under the leadership of Supervisor Clavin and the Town Board, the Town of Hempstead was also recognized by top Wall Street agencies in 2020-2021, receiving two credit rating increases from Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s Investors Services, earning the respect of Wall Street along with the trust of Main Street. Finally, the Town of Hempstead continues to invest in infrastructure, with major improvements to roadways, parks and facilities.

“I thank everyone for their support at today’s Town of Hempstead Induction Ceremony, held outside at the Senior Councilwoman Dorothy L. Goosby Plaza at Town Hall,” Supervisor Clavin said. “Today’s celebratory program help set a tone of strength and resiliency as we embark on the year 2022. As we begin a new term, I look forward to working together with my colleagues on the Town Board to continue taking on the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, invest in our roadways and facilities, paving the way for our future and providing relief to taxpayers at a time when they need it the most.”
