East Meadow, NY – With scorching temperatures forecast for later this week, Supervisor Don Clavin and the Hempstead Town Board are helping residents beat the heat by opening cooling centers and extending hours at town beaches and pools. Today, at Veterans Memorial Pool in East Meadow, Supervisor Clavin detailed the extended hours and invited all residents who find themselves without sufficient air conditioning to visit one of the town’s senior centers, which are doubling as cooling facilities beginning Wednesday.
“Extreme heat can lead to a number of health risks, especially heat exhaustion, which can be life-threatening,” said Supervisor Clavin. “We want all residents to be safe during this week’s heat wave. Accordingly, we are announcing the opening of air-conditioned cooling centers throughout our town, as well as extended hours at Town of Hempstead pools and beaches.”
Town pools and beaches are fully staffed by highly trained lifeguards. What’s more, Hempstead Town Shark Patrol will continue to monitor local waterways to ensure safe, shark-free waters for beachgoers. Lifeguards will also be taking additional precautions throughout the week to protect residents from potential rip currents.
Starting Wednesday, July 26th, beach hours will be extended to 7 PM, while pools will be open until 8 PM through Saturday, July 29th. Cooling centers will begin operating out of Town of Hempstead senior centers from 9 AM to 4 PM on the following schedule:
