First Spawn of Clams Scheduled at Shellfish Hatchery
Tuesday, January 25, 2022
After spending six weeks in the conditioning tank feeding on a mixed diet of diatoms and flagellate algae, the Town's adult broodstock clams are ready to spawn. The shellfish hatchery's staff will spend the next several days slowly warming the water temperature of the spawning tank, making it feel like spring, to manipulate these adult clams into releasing their eggs. A good spawn can result in a release of over 100,000,000 clam eggs! The eggs will be collected, fertilized, and hatched within the Town's aquaculture facility. The clams will be raised from microscopic free swimming larvae all the way to seedling size of about 20mm. This happens in the Town's shellfish facilities between January and November.
We cannot predict the exact day and time the shellfish will decide to spawn. This is sometimes a multi day process. Anyone who is interested in learning more about shellfish aquaculture techniques is welcome to schedule a tour of the shellfish facility.
