Rental Apartments

Effective April 30, 2021, the Town of Hempstead Housing Authority waiting list will be closed and the Housing Authority will not be accepting new applications for housing in its 14 rental complexes. Applications for the Golden Age Coop Housing Program will still be accepted.

Apartments

The Town of Hempstead Housing Authority owns and operates 1,309 apartments at 14 separate locations throughout the Town of Hempstead, stretching from the Queens border to the Town of Oyster Bay. The primary goal of the Housing Authority has been and will continue to be, our commitment to provide safe, sanitary, housing in the most efficient and cost-effective manner.

There are efficiency (EFF) apartments for single persons over the age of 62; 1-bedroom apartments for couples with heads of household 62 years or older. The Housing Authority also accepts applications for family apartments consisting of 2 to 4 bedrooms, available at 2 of our complexes. View the apartments in the Resource Directory.

Included in Apartments

All apartments include a range, refrigerator, tile bath, emergency alarm system, etc. Those developments catering exclusively to senior citizens have air-conditioned recreation/social halls. Activities for residents and community members, coordinated by the Town of Hempstead Department of Senior Enrichment, are available some weekdays.

Rental Information

The rentals for these apartments will be 30% of the income. Utilities are included for all apartments, except at Roosevelt and Westbury, where a utility allowance is subtracted from the monthly rent.

Qualifications

You qualify for senior citizen housing if:

  • You are currently a resident of the Town of Hempstead.
  • You are 62 years of age or older (for senior citizen housing only).
  • Your annual income does not exceed:
    • $66,450 for single persons
    • $75,950 for couples

You qualify for the large family apartments if:

  • You are currently a resident of the Town of Hempstead.
  • You have at least one child or are expecting one.
  • Your annual income does not exceed:
    • $75,950 for 2 persons
    • $85,450 for 3 persons
    • $94,900 for 4 persons
    • $102,500 for 5 persons
